Container Ship “RENA” Grounded on Astrolabe Reef New Zealand

The fully loaded container ship caused the worst environmental disaster in New Zealand’s history. Maritime New Zealand in preparing for the ‘worst case scenario’ requested AMSA for assistance. Along with Oil Pollution Clean-up Equipment, two of ORCA’s experienced staff, Ben Cropley-CEO and Mark Jenneys- State Manager South Australia were deployed to assist.

Ben was involved with shoreline assessment and the clean up, along with the role of community liasson with information sessions to the local communities.

Mark’s experience was used in the deployment and training of equipment. All staff at ORCA are on standby if further assistance is required.

Oil Pollution Breakfast

Ben,Narelle,Mark and Anthony on behalf of ORCA attended the Department of Transport Victoria(SEMD)Marine Pollution Breakfast on 8th April 2011. The Breakfast was aimed at informing Victorian Emergency Services about Marine Pollution response and how they fit into the Incident Management Framework.

Narelle and Ben attended this years International Oil Spill Conference. That was held in Portland,Oregon at the end of May. It was great to see some of the advances in equipment being put forward.

NRT Training

ORCA have been asked by AMSA-Australian Maritime Safety Authority to conduct Equipment Training for the National Response Team. This took place in May and June 2011.
